Ferrytale
UK 2011 - 18 mins.
Octavia Hartland
Started in 1908, Hammerton's Ferry in South West London is the last remaining privately owned passenger ferry on the tidal Thames. Loved by locals and tourists, Hammerton's is the epitome of an idyllic river life still alive in 2011.
What begins as the perfect postcard for life on the Thames soon reveals the ferry's darker history. Even now, life as a ferryman is not an easy one.
This is the poignant story of a small slice of London's history, never before heard. Told beautifully through the eyes of the present owner, Francis Spencer, and the memories of the great niece of original owner, Freda Hammerton, Ferrytale will convince you that there is more to city life in the 21st Century than rat races and technology. -
The Ration Shed
Australia - 2009 - 21 mins.
Robyn Hofmeyr
An evocative collection of personal stories of the time when the Indigenous people of Cherbourg were under the control of the Superintendent and forced to live on meagre rations.
This is the story of a community's journey to preserve these memories, pay tribute to their elders, and to let their young people know about the past, in order to understand the present and to dream a new dream for the future. -
Manuel de los Santos
UK 2010 - 4 mins.
Peter Montgomery
Manuel de los Santos is one of sport's most inspirational figures. Growing up in the Dominican Republic, he played baseball from a young age and by 2003 was planning to turn professional. But a motorcycle accident changed his life forever when he lost his left leg above the knee.
Following this accident, he moved to France and on seeing the film, 'The Legend of Bagger Vance', he was inspired to take up golf. Now 26 years old, Manuel lives in Paris and plays to a handicap of just three, competing in high profile tournaments all around the world. His extraordinary golf swing has become instantly recognisable.
Peter Montgomery read about Manuel at the end of 2009 and had the idea of making a film about him. This short documentary portrait is the result. -
Steam of Life
Finland 2010 - 80 mins.
Joonas Berghäll, Mika Hotakainen
WATCH TRAILER
Naked Finnish men sit in the sauna and speak straight from their heart. In the warmth of rusty stoves these men cleanse themselves both physically and mentally.
The film travels through Finland and the camera joins men in many different saunas to let us hear touching stories about love, death, birth and friendship.
In all of its simplicity camera records the landscapes, saunas and men in almost magical pictures.
The presence of the characters and the depth of the emotion reaches the limit where it is almost intolerable for the viewer to watch.
This film reveals the naked souls of these men exceptionally intimately and creates a poetic portrayal of Finnish men.
